For now, my fun reading is interrupted by school (boo), but graduation is in six weeks, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel! If it's possible to have an addiction to books, I totally have one. The great thing about reading when I'm too poor to travel (because I'm doing an internship, so basically working full-time for free) is that getting into a good book is like taking a mental vacation. Just recently I got to hang out with a fictional first lady in Washington DC through reading American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. I went to London in Confessions of a Shopaholic, I've even been to Paris recently with Left Bank by Kate Muir; all from the comfort of my own couch/bed. Good times.

Brad and I are hooked on paperbackswap.com, where you can post old books for credits, and then you can use your credits to order books from other people. Super cool. You should do it.

I can't wait to take more brain vacations (braincations?) soon, very soon.

No. He's still good looking on the bench.

I don't need him to be playing to look at him. In fact, now I can see him better because he won't be wearing a helmet. It's like we moved to a fucking redneckville trailer park. Is my house sitting on cinder blocks? Do I have random vehicle remnants scattered around my yard? NO! Seriously, people. Anyway, tonight I got to thinking: How awesome would an all-round (and I mean ALL-AROUND) competition be? It would kick so much ass if there were a handful of olympians who competed against each other in every single damn event (not counting team sports) for a medal. Seriously, these people would be running marathons, diving, doing the pommel horse, pole vaulting, swimming, sprinting, steeplechasing, archery, and whatever other events there are. I'm sure all the participants would be horrible at everything, but I would watch it purely for the laughs. Hilarity would be sure to ensue. It would be the best once-every-four-year sports clusterfuck known to man, guaranteed to be a ratings goldmine.

Speaking of the steeplechase race, did anyone see that? I was watching people do things that are usually done by animals, or I guess in this case it would be animals with people on them (whatever). These people run around the track jumping over horse obstacles, one of which was a water hole. It felt like something was missing, though. Horses have to run this crap with people on their backs; shouldn't these steeplechasers have to run around with some kind of creature strapped to them? I think it would make the race more comparable to its originating horse race, and it would be a shitload more fun to watch.
Pardon the writing, it's hard to write in paint on a laptop. I'll end up eating something I haven't had in a while, and it's like I'm rediscovering it all over again. Brad bought some salami the other day, and I swear I've eaten half the package. I forgot how much I looooooove hard salami. This has also happened with Dr. Pepper, yogurt, biscuits, and I can't even remember the rest. WTF. How the hell does someone forget that they like something?

Completely unrelated:
I was reading The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, and Brad was making fun of me for being a sucker for feel-good books. Yes, I like books like Chicken Soup for the Arbitrarily Selected Person's Soul, I'll admit it, but is that so bad? Brad said, "What's in those, like sob stories and crap? I can't believe you stoop to that level." So I told him, "Maybe you should try reading Chicken Soup for the Douchebag's Soul." He can be such an assface sometimes.

I actually kind of forgot it existed until I started reading Sam's blog, and it made me miss writing out my "junk."

A whole heck of a lot has happened since I last posted in December (I am so ashamed)! I'll give you the quick and dirty version, and I'll give you the juicy details later.

Since December of 2007:

Brad and I celebrated one year of being married. Yay!

We moved out of our apartment and into a house in April/March (it's fuzzy).

We have been slowly but surely working on the house. It doesn't quite feel like home yet, but it's getting there.

We got a new roommate. His name is Olly, and he rocks.

My parents decided they were sick of Houston, so they went to Brazil indefinitely (WTF).

I am trying to get their house sold, and it's a pain in the ass.

My last day of work is in exactly two weeks, then I will be a full time student once again. I want to graduate in May very, very, very badly.

I get to work with real clients this semester, and I am terrified!!!

That's all I can think of for now. I will come back and elaborate, and maybe I'll even post some pictures. Let me fill you in on what's been going on in my world. My second semester of grad school is coming to an end, and I am glad to have a break coming very shortly! I have been working two jobs, trying to keep my head above water in three classes, and also trying to keep a happy marriage.

We are approaching our one year wedding anniversary this Sunday! I can't believe we've been married for a whole year. Time goes by way too fast.

I am quitting one of my jobs at the end of this year, so hopefully I will have more time to make things and blog next year. I can't wait to tackle all the projects I've been accumulating in hopes of having a spare moment.

Here's what I'll be working on in the next couple of weeks:

Soft trees from Little Birds

Wrapping gifts and using these cute ornaments from Nut and Bee as gift tags. So cute!

Sending out a few Christmas cards from Paper Source

Here are some things I've been looking at lately:

Lowercase L

Apostrophe Abuse

Laissez Faire Design

Shelterrific

Design Sponge

Design is Mine

At Home in Rome

Passive Aggressive Notes

Not Martha

Obsessive Consumption

I want this for our house, but I'm afraid that's as close to having it as I'll ever get. Do I have $500 dollars for a desk I don't need? No, I sure don't.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a relaxing holiday season. I've already started my Christmas shopping, but I still have a lot left. Happy Holidays!

I made Lotta's simple tote, and let me tell you, it looks cute. I'm sure if you were to look at it closely, you could find many imperfections, but considering I had never made anything like it before, I'd say I did a pretty damn good job.

Here's what it's supposed to look like, according to the book:
You can find the simple tote instructions, straight from the book, at Canadian Living.
I decided to make mine with a longer strap, since I like to throw tote bags over my shoulder instead of having to hold them in my hand. Even if I don't end up using it for work or class, it could always serve as a reusable shopping bag.

Maybe it would look better hanging from a tree or something. How can you drive and play the harmonica at the same time? He was all into it, playing with two hands! We decided to go out on Saturday and drive down to the Woodlands for lunch, and then 1960 to go to Half Price Books. (Brad and I thought it would be a good idea to go load up on books a couple of times this summer, since I've been on a reading kick and my to-read list has gotten pretty long.) Well, for most of the drive down it was raining so bad we could barely see the road, and that was pretty scary. We had lunch at the Olive Garden, then we were on out way to get some books. We spotted a large consignment/antique store, so we had to stop and take a look. We bought a huge dark wood tray that fits right into our decor, and I bought an embroidered Mrs. pillowcase because I just thought it was cute.

Anyway, after out little outing, we didn't have anywhere else to go, and we didn't want to go out in the rain anyway, so I had to find something to do. I found this really cool recipe for Homemade Oreos on Smitten Kitchen through notmartha. I made a batch, and they are so delicious. They go really good with milk.

We passed the rest of the time working on this puzzle that Brad picked up at a garage sale. Well, I worked on it by myself mostly. Brad didn't have the patience to deal with all the blue and that black corner. It was pretty tough, but it sure was fun. I love putting puzzles together.

Overall, though, it was a pretty sleepy weekend. I was waiting for something big to happen, and for things to get wrapped up, but I was kind of disappointed with the ending. So, I did a little research, and it looks like there will be a season 7! That makes the vague, cliffhanger ending excusable (I guess). I used to hate the show. I thought it was corny and stupid, but I started watching the rerun episodes that come on a million times a day, and I started liking it. So, now I'm hooked, and I would've been really mad if the whole show ended like it did.

I will be working a lot, but I won't be taking any classes, and that's what makes it a vacation for me. I have been taking summer classes since I started my undergrad degree, and now that I have finally graduated and started a grad program, I think I deserve this summer off. I'm excited to get some reading done, maybe do a little traveling, some sewing, have a yard sale, and whatever other house projects I can come up with. I just hope Brad doesn't sit at home looking at my mess all day while I'm at work. That's the upside and the downside to marrying a teacher. The upside is he doesn't have to drive 40 miles to work each way. The downside is he doesn't have anything to do , so he sits at home all day with my mess and then he complains about it when I get home from work. Oh well. My summer is going to be good, anyway.

I don't do it enough as I'd like to. When summer comes, and I'm not taking classes, I read whatever I can get my hands on. I get so excited to be able to read something that's not a textbook, that I go all out and start stocking up on books and making reading lists. Today I finished reading A Million Little Pieces by James Frey, which I liked very much, but I couldn't help but be curious about all the controversy about the story being very embellished and Frey being "the man who conned Oprah." That brought me to thinking about all the commotion made about kids reading books like Harry Potter and all the religious fanatics getting their panties in a bunch of The Da Vinci Code. Here's my point: If people are reading, does it really matter what they're reading? At least they're reading! I wouldn't be concerned if a child of mine was reading a Harry Potter book, considering it's fiction, because I would just be happy he or she is doing something other than playing video games or getting in trouble. Reading keeps your mind sharp; it makes you think, it improves your writing, and it improves your vocabulary! Why are some people so against reading? It makes me so frustrated to look a someone's profile whose response to "favorite books" is, "Book? What's that?" or, "I don't read." It doesn't make you cool to not read, specially if you're in college or you want to pretend you have an education. It really makes you look quite stupid. Sure, most of us don't have time to sit around a read books all the time, but I'm sure most of us have a book we have liked at some point in time, or would even like to pick up another one. Hell, read the newspaper, pick up a magazine, read a cereal box...Just read something. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

I don't know what made me go off on this tangent, but it's something I think about every now and then, so I figured I should let it out sooner or later, and what better place to do it than on my very own blog? Okay, I feel better now.

If you're not wanting to get sick, then you know not to go to a taco truck. Those tacos may as well be made by someone's butt. Anyway, here are my plants.

My other first step in getting crafty was borrowing my mom's sewing machine indefinitely. Now, I just have to learn how to sew. I haven't used a sewing machine since 8th grade home ec, when I made the most deformed teddy bear the world has ever laid eyes on. Seriously, though. His ears were at 11 o'clock and 3 o'clock and his poor little tail was only half sewn on. Then, I stuffed him until he was as hard as a month-old loaf of bread. The only thing I'm missing is this book:
I saw it on Not Martha, and I already asked Brad to get it for me so I can make cool stuff for our project we call home. I think I might start with some placemats and napkins, but then again who knows.

In my entire life, I have never felt more beautiful than when I was in my wedding dress with my hair done, with makeup on, and wearing jewelry that I picked out really carefully.
2. There were people there who came from all over for me! It made me feel so loved and happy, and I was surrounded by people who really care about me.
3. I had lots and LOTS of fun!
4. I want to type. I like typing. This is a laptop. My left eye is burning because there is probably something in it, such as mascara crumblies. I finished my book today. The title was Good In Bed. I was nice to read a book about a big girl. In the last two books I’ve read, there have been women who got pregnant by apathetic men. I thought it was kind of a weird coincidence that I read them back to back, considering I don’t remember any other book in which a character got pregnant, and then struggled with the decision of whether or not to keep a baby whose father didn’t give a rat’s ass.

Last night I thought about how much I would love to write something that people would actually be interested in reading. I have always tried to write short stories, or I would get ambitious and try to start on a longer story, but my creativity ran dry after a little while. I had great ideas on where to start, I had some ideas for characters, but that never really developed either. I would even be happy if I had a cool blog or something. I guess this whole writing thing probably has to do with all the books I’ve been reading that have characters in them who are writers working for magazines or newspapers. I don’t want to be a professional writer or anything, but I think it would be a fun thing to explore. Isn’t that weird, though, how the main character in chick lit always works at a magazine, a newspaper, publishers, something to do with writing, etc?? I think it’s funny. I guess the authors feel like they can be more realistic and include more juicy details in a story that has something to do with what they are familiar, which would be writing.

Ok, I’m rambling. I think I might go to bed soon because I’m a little tired and I want to get up early to go work out. Fun stuff. I want to do something different, have new experiences, meet new people, see things I haven't seen before. I think I want a new job. I don't have any reason to stay where I am since my boss is has been transferred to a different office.

Another thing is the big WHAT IF. I don't have a "plan B" or a backup in case I'm not accepted into the graduate program. It's not that I think I won't make it in or that I'm not capable, but I'm just worried about what to do IF my plan A falls through. I guess I don't feel like I'm in a place where I can make big life-changing decisions right now. I don't want to feel like, "This is it?" Sometimes I just get this feeling of boredom, and I want to get out there and do something! Last time that happened, Brad and I ended up going to DC via Greyhound. I wonder where it'll take us this time. Maybe I'm just ready for the semester to be over, to be married, have a degree, get a new job, etc.

I'm glad I started hanging out with Stacey again. Yeah, me too. I think that's why blogs were invented.

Anyhoot, I paid off everything (Magnolia Lake, flowers, and DJ) for the wedding today, so now we just need to get there! Now I'm starting to think about what I want to do with my hair and how pasty I'm gonna be, and also getting my nails done. Bla bla bla. What made me think that trying to graduate (while taking 2 French classes) and throwing together a wedding at the same time was a good idea? If I didn't know how to prioritize then, hopefully I'll learn something from this. Hahahaha. No I won't. I'm starting to worry about my dress, though. Sure, it hasn't been 12 weeks yet, but I've been reading pretty bad reviews about David's Bridal, so now I'm scared that they're gonna screw me over now that they have my money. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm not the waiting type of person, though, so I'm going to call them and ask what's up with my dress.

Yep yep yep.

I have 4 tests next week (that I know of). Boo. School. Boo.

Has anyone had any experience with professional spray tanning? I don't want to be the color of my dress, but I don't want to get skin cancer as a wedding gift (thanks, but no thanks). I have a coupon for a couple of spray tans, so I was just wondering whether or not it would be a good idea to do something like that, or if I should avoid it so I don't look like I'm one yellow stripe away from looking like candy corn walking down the aisle.

It's the beginning of another semester. So far, I like most of my classes. This is maybe the second semester that I've had a class that had homework and in-class activities that you actually turn in. What is this? High school? Oh well. I actually like homework in a sick kind of way. It forces me to do something other than be too lazy to read my textbooks. Bleh. I'm ready to kick some grade ass this semester! Woo! I want to finish my undergrad career with a bang...and at least a 3.5. We'll see how that goes, huh? If I don't get an A in Kinesiology I'll cry...Not because I'm one of those people who are anal about their grades, but because I'll be extremely disappointed in myself and my abilities to not be a total moron. Brad and I have been going to bed really early the past couple of days. It's cute, but kind of sad that we count down the hours until we can finally turn in for the night. Haha...Old people. So far, I actually like having to be here on campus before 8 every morning. Somehow it makes me feel really awake in the middle of the day, unlike when I used to drag myself out of bed to go to an 11 o'clock class or something and then go home and nap some more. I won't allow myself to nap anymore because I know that I can't limit myself to just 45 minutes or so. If I'm taking a nap, I'm taking a 3 hour nap. That's what we had to do when the power randomly went out last week. Brad and I decided that it would be a good time to sleep, since there was nothing else we could do in a dark house anyway, so we did. That was a good nap. I drooled all over the couch. Anyway, I'm going to class in about ten minutes and I'm hungry, so I'm gonna stop here and have a snack so my stomach doesn't embarass me in Abnormal Psych.

It just gets so boring when you fall into a routine and nothing fun and exciting is going on. You know...work, sleep, work sleep, watch tv, work sleep, avoid laundry/cleaning, sleep. It gets old after a while. School starts up again real soon and I'm excited for the change of pace, but I'm dreading all the work I'm going to have to do. C'mon graduation! There's just so much to look forward to later in the year that I'm really ready to be there already. I'm getting that itch to go somewhere again. Last time this happened, Brad and I ended up taking the Greyhound all the way to Washington D.C. I always thought that I was the kind of person who enjoyed routine and didn't like change much, but I guess either I was wrong or I've changed. Now I'm the kind of person who likes to randomly decide to do something and catch toads in cups outside. I'm maturing in reverse, or immaturing I guess. I feel so restless in the office right now. I think I'll just use my lunch hour to get out and go twitch somewhere. haha. Man, it's boring here. I can't even think of anything I care to look at on the internet anymore! I don't work tomorrow, though. I wonder what I'll end up doing.

I already have a nice little list going of what to read next. I've been trying to find a copy of that "100 books to read before you graduate from high school" list, but I haven't had any luck. I don't even know if it's actually 100 books, so if anyone who reads this knows what I'm talking about and/or maybe has a copy or knows where to find one, just let me know and I'll appreciate it a lot.

I wrote in my journal last night for the first time in about 4 months. I always forget how good it feels to have a private journal where you can just let out all your thoughts and no one will ever know about them, hopefully. After I finished that, I started going through and reading entries in my old journal. I couldn't help but feel stupid and silly remembering all the things I would get excited about or stress about. I'm sure I'll feel the same way in however many years when I look over my most recent journal entries. It's just so interesting to be able to guage how many changes I've made since high school. I just wish I could be more consistent about it.

So, I sent off about 10 ideas for greeting cards today to a place called Oatmeal Studios. They pay $75 for each idea they use, so maybe I'll make at least $75, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. It would be neat, though! Not only can I use some extra cash, but it would be cool to be able to say that I'm a published greeting card writer. I could be like Adam Sandler in Mr. Deeds, only I won't inherit billions of dollars just out of nowhere and then find out that it really belongs to my creepy butler who has a thing for feet. Maybe I'll be able to come up with some more clever stuff to send it. I'm alone in the office, so that's kinda neat I guess. I called the doctor's office yesterday to see about my test results, which were normal! Yay! I was so afraid I was going to need chunks to be taken off me and analyzed. Don't want to deal with that. Hopefully when I go back in six months everything will still be normal.

Brad started training/orientation for his new job today. I'm glad he's finally back to work and doing something other than sitting around the house being bitter and bored. We're both going to be really busy soon, so I guess we'll see how well we get along then. I actually think we'll get along better because he won't be sitting at home all day looking at my clutter that I'm too lazy to clean up. I still haven't finished unpacking! Maybe I'll get some of it done this weekend. I haven't even folded/put away the laundry that I did more than 2 weeks ago. Boy am I glad that I don't work in retail anymore.

So, I'm bored at work. I finished another book yesterday. I was reading In Her Shoes, and it was really good. I liked it a lot. So much, actually, that I finished it in a couple of days.
My other book by Jennifer Weiner hasn't gotten here yet EVEN THOUGH I BOUGHT IT IN MAY!!! Someone on Ebay is getting negative feeeeeeeeeedbaaaaaaaack! Really, now. I've been reading a lot this summer. It's nice to be able to read for enjoyment rather than for school. I can't blame Dan Brown anymore for me not getting into grad school bc I already sent in my application and got 2/3 letters of recommendation that I needed. Yay! Now I just need to write a cheesy self-promoting essay. I can't wait! (Really, I can, and I have been waiting, so HA!) I still need to find a third person to write me a letter. Now I kind of wish that I had sucked up to more profs. Haha.

Brad and I put down a deposit for a photographer, so that's exciting, I guess. I just want everything to be done and nice and over. Which reminds me: I still need to call the guy who does the chocolate fountain. I figured, since we're not having alcohol we might as well let people indulgle in chocolate-dipped whatever. We shall see. Another thing is I realized that I have way too many cousins to have a small wedding. That's good and bad at the same time because (1) the more the merrier, but (2) if we jump from 100 to 200 guests our costs go up more than $1000. Oooohhhh, slap in the face. Oh well, suck it up and deal. I'll only get married once (hopefully), so we better do it up right!
